Near-death Experiences and Ayahuasca- Induced Experiences - Two Unique Pathways to a Phenomenologically Similar State of Consciousness

چکیده

Individuals who survive a close brush with death often experience a profound altered state of consciousness known as a ‘‘near-death experience.’’ Individuals who drink a South American medicine, known as ‘‘ayahuasca,’’ experience an altered state of consciousness with numerous similarities to near-death experiences. These similarities, which occur on perceptual, emotional, cognitive, and transcendent levels, suggest near-death experiences and ayahuascainduced experiences may involve a similar state of consciousness. This article compares and contrasts the phenomena of near-death experiences and ayahuasca-induced experiences. Common features of these experiences suggest ayahuasca may be useful as a research tool in the investigation of near-death experience phenomena. Further research is suggested to expand our understanding of human consciousness and near-death experiences.

The Psychedelic State Induced by Ayahuasca Modulates the Activity and Connectivity of the Default Mode Network

The experiences induced by psychedelics share a wide variety of subjective features, related to the complex changes in perception and cognition induced by this class of drugs. A remarkable increase in introspection is at the core of these altered states of consciousness. Self-oriented mental activity has been consistently linked to the Default Mode Network (DMN), a set of brain regions more act...

In contrast, our EEG data were collected using intracranial electrodes, which are much more sensitive (3). Moreover, the human near-death EEG data have not been analyzed using the advanced signal processing tools that are used in our study. We are awar...

The Coceivability of a Disembodied Personal Life Beyond Death Based on David Lund’s Views

As science focuses exclusively on the physical, it seems to assume that the brain has a key role in the origin if not also the constitution of our consciousness; and thus the destruction of the brain, the nervous system, and the body makes it pointless or even absurd to think of any personal consciousness after death. But one need not be convinced by this. However, any effort to investigate a p...

Incidence and correlates of near-death experiences in a cardiac care unit.

Near-death experiences, unusual experiences during a close brush with death, may precipitate pervasive attitudinal and behavior changes. The incidence and psychological correlates of such experiences, and their association with proximity to death, are unclear. We conducted a 30-month survey to identify near-death experiences in a tertiary care center cardiac inpatient service. In a consecutive ...

N ear-death experiences (NDEs), profound experiences reported by some people who survive close brushes with death, are important to clinicians because they often lead to pervasive changes in attitudes and behavior; because they may be confused with psychopathological states; and because they may enhance our understanding of consciousness. Proposed psychological and physiological explanations la...
